Down Jackets – Warmth Without the Weight
A down jacket is the most efficient way to stay warm with minimal weight and bulk. Natural down traps air between its clusters and creates an insulating layer that synthetic fills struggle to match at the same weight. That is why down jackets are a favourite for cold days in the city, as a warm layer on winter hikes and ski touring, and for breaks at the mountain hut.
In this category you will find men's and women's down jackets and vests by Kilpi (Czech Republic), Husky (Czech Republic), Mac in a Sac (Northern Ireland) and James & Nicholson, selected for real conditions in the Rila, Pirin and Vitosha mountains.
How to Choose a Down Jacket
- Type of fill: natural goose or duck down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio. Synthetic fill is heavier but keeps more of its insulation when wet.
- Down/feather ratio: the higher the share of down (for example 90/10 or 80/20), the lighter and warmer the jacket.
- Fill power (cuin): shows how much volume the down takes up. A higher value means more warmth for less weight.
- Outer fabric: a water-repellent finish protects the down from wet snow and light rain. In prolonged rain, wear a membrane jacket on top.
- Packability: many models pack into their own pocket or stuff sack, which is handy for your backpack and for travel.
- Details: a hood, elastic cuffs and an adjustable hem keep cold air out.
Down vs Synthetic – Comparison
| Criterion | Natural down | Synthetic fill |
|---|---|---|
| Warmth for weight | Excellent | Good |
| Packability | Very high | Medium |
| When wet | Loses much of its insulation | Keeps much of its insulation |
| Durability | Many years with proper care | Loses loft faster |
| Best for | Cold, dry weather, city, huts, travel | Wet conditions and high-output activity |
Down Jackets for the Mountains and the City
On winter hikes a down jacket works best as a warm layer during breaks or under a membrane jacket that keeps the down dry. Underneath, wear thermal underwear that wicks moisture away from your skin. For the city, choose a model with a tougher outer fabric and a longer cut. A down vest is a practical choice for spring and autumn when you want a warm core and free arms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a down jacket be machine washed?
Most models can be washed on a delicate cycle up to 30 °C with a down detergent and no fabric softener. Tumble dry on low heat with 2–3 tennis balls to break up the down. Always check the care label. If you prefer professional cleaning, choose a dry cleaner that specialises in down garments – they will clean and re-loft the jacket without damaging the down.
What size should I choose?
If you will wear the jacket over a fleece or a thicker layer, choose your usual size with a little room. Down insulates best when it is not compressed, so a jacket that is too tight will be less warm.
Is a down jacket suitable for rain?
The outer fabric copes with snow and light rain, but in prolonged rain the down can get wet. In that case wear a rain jacket or membrane shell on top, such as the Kilpi Mamba or Hastar hardshell jackets.
How should I store my down jacket?
Between seasons keep it on a hanger or in a large cotton bag, not compressed in its stuff sack. This way the down keeps its loft and insulation.
