Headlamps – Free Hands and Clear Light in the Dark
A headlamp is an essential part of your mountain pack, even on a day hike. Sunset comes earlier than expected, the hike takes longer, and descending in the dark without light is dangerous. A headlamp is also indispensable for camping, fishing, running, repairs and power cuts.

How to Choose a Headlamp
- Brightness (lumens): shows the amount of light. For camping and reading, 100–300 lumens are enough, for mountain hikes 300–600, and for running in the dark, search and professional use over 1,000.
- Beam distance: a focused beam reaches far, while a wide beam lights the area in front of your feet evenly. Good models combine both modes.
- Power source: rechargeable headlamps charge via USB and are economical with frequent use. AAA battery models are handy on multi-day treks far from power.
- Water resistance (IPX): IPX4 withstands rain, while IPX7–IPX8 survive immersion in water, which matters for fishing and bad weather.
- Red light: does not dazzle others at camp and does not scare fish. It preserves your night vision.
- Weight and comfort: light headlamps suit running and long hikes, while heavier powerful models often have an over-the-head strap for better stability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Rechargeable or battery-powered headlamp?
A rechargeable headlamp is more economical with frequent use and usually more powerful. An AAA battery headlamp is practical on multi-day treks, because spare batteries are available everywhere. Some models work with both power sources.
How long does a headlamp last?
It depends on the mode. On the lowest setting most headlamps run for tens of hours, and on maximum from about an hour to a few hours. Manufacturers list the runtime for each mode in the specifications.
Is a headlamp suitable for fishing?
Yes. Choose a model with red light, which does not scare fish or dazzle, and with high water resistance (IPX7 or higher).
Can I use my headlamp in the rain?
Yes, if it is rated at least IPX4. For immersion in water or very bad weather, choose IPX7–IPX8.
