The Bulgarian mountains offer a variety of opportunities for recreation, sports and tourism. With their harsh and simultaneously captivating nature, they attract thousands of tourists throughout the year. For many who love mountain tourism, the huts are a preferred place to stay overnight and a starting point for exciting climbs.

In the following lines, we will introduce you to the highest located huts in Bulgaria, as well as other important and popular mountain huts that offer impressive views.

TOP highest huts in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has many huts scattered throughout its beautiful mountains, but some of them stand out for their impressive location at high altitude. They not only offer shelter in the heart of nature, but also reveal breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks, lakes and high-altitude trails.

Tevno Lake Shelter – 2512 m above sea level

Although not a hut in the classic sense, the Tevno Lake shelter in Pirin is located at an altitude of 2,512 meters above sea level, making it the highest inhabited structure in the country. It is located next to the beautiful Tevno Lake and is surrounded by the harsh and impressive nature of the Pirin peaks.

The shelter offers basic conditions - electricity from a local hydroelectric power plant, water from an external spring and sanitary facilities. Despite the spartan equipment, it remains a preferred overnight stop among experienced mountaineers. It is suitable for tourists who are moving along high-altitude routes and need safety and shelter in this part of the mountain.

Musala Hut - 2,389 m above sea level

Located at the foot of Musala Peak - the highest peak in the Balkans, Musala Hut is located at an impressive 2,389 meters above sea level. This technically makes it the highest hut in the country. However, it should be noted that due to its limited accommodation conditions, it is not perceived as a full-fledged hut by most tourist sources.

The building is an old wooden structure, electrified but not water-supplied. However, the hut offers warm shelter and basic amenities for an overnight stay. It can be reached in about 1 hour on foot from the upper station of the Yastrebets lift, which departs from the Borovets resort. The entire walking distance from Borovets to the hut lasts about 4.5 hours.

The Musala hut is suitable as an intermediate stop for tourists planning to climb to the top, as well as for those seeking close contact with the alpine nature of Rila.

Ivan Vazov Hut – 2300 m above sea level

Ivan Vazov Hut is located in the northwestern part of Rila – the highest mountain on the Balkan Peninsula. With its height of 2300 meters, it is considered the highest hut in Bulgaria offering full service. It is located in the picturesque area of Pazardere, near the natural phenomenon of the Seven Rila Lakes and Kalin Peak.

The hut is a two-story building, electrified and water-supplied, with a capacity of 73 places, including in the surrounding bungalows. It operates year-round and offers the opportunity to prepare meals independently in a separate dining room. Products and equipment are delivered with the help of horses, as the place is remote and inaccessible to cars.

Access to the hut is via routes requiring good physical fitness – the most popular route passes through the Seven Lakes hut and takes over 6 hours. Despite the strenuous climb, the views along the way and the tranquility of the place make the effort fully justified.

Yastrebets Hut – 2369 m above sea level

Located above the Borovets resort, Yastrebets Hut is located at 2369 meters above sea level and offers an impressive panorama of Musala Peak and the surrounding peaks of Rila. The hut is easily reached by lift from Borovets, making it extremely accessible for tourists of all ages.

The hut has a capacity of 25 places and is suitable for both summer vacation and winter sports. In addition to overnight stays, it also offers good cuisine. Due to the convenient access and favorable conditions, it is often visited by mountaineers and skiers.

Bezbog Hut – 2236 m above sea level

Bezbog Hut is located in the Pirin Mountains, at the foot of the eponymous peak, on the shore of the beautiful Bezbog Lake. With its 2236 meters above sea level, it is among the highest located huts in the country. It is reached by a lift from the Gotse Delchev hut, and the hike takes about 2 and a half hours on foot.

The hut is modernized, with good accommodation conditions and offers opportunities for both summer and winter vacations. The area is particularly popular with photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. Several scenic routes to peaks such as Polezhan and Jano begin here.

Among all the high-located huts in Bulgaria, the Ivan Vazov hut stands out as the highest, which fully meets the classic definition of a hut, although Musala is located at a higher altitude than it. However, the highest habitable building for overnight stays in Bulgaria is not a hut in the full sense of the word, but the Tevno Ezero shelter.

As for the most easily accessible high-altitude huts, Yastrebets in Rila and Bezbog in Pirin deserve special attention. During the winter season, when conditions in the mountains become more difficult, huts such as Bezbog, Yastrebets and Malyovitsa stand out as the best options for winter tourism.
