5 easy mountain hikes suitable for children
Hiking in nature is one of the most fulfilling experiences a family can share. Hiking with children offers the opportunity for fun, learning, physical activity and connection with nature. There are many easy routes in Bulgaria that are perfectly suitable for the youngest adventurers.
In the following lines, we will present you five easy mountain routes that are tested, accessible and safe, tailored to the age and capabilities of children.
1. The Black Rock – Rila Mountain
The hike to the Black Rock in Rila Mountain starts from the Borovets resort and ends at the rock itself. The distance in one direction is about 3.6 kilometers, and the time required to complete the route is approximately an hour and a half. The elevation gain along the route is 223 meters, which makes it relatively easy and well-tolerable even for children.

The route is an excellent choice for a family walk, thanks to the even terrain and the shade provided by the dense forest. The trail is well marked, and there are benches along it, which allow for breaks and provide additional comfort.
The Black Rock impresses not only with its beautiful views, but also with its natural wealth - rare plant and animal species are found in the area. The hike is especially suitable in spring, summer and early autumn. In addition, it can be combined with a visit to interesting sites nearby, such as Tsarska Bistritsa, Samokov or the Beli Iskar eco-trail.
2. Demyanitsa Hut – Pirin Mountain
The route to Demyanitsa Hut in Pirin Mountain starts from the Todorova Ornitsa area, located near Bansko. The distance to the hut is about 3.75 kilometers one way, and it takes approximately two and a half hours to complete. The route is characterized by a difference in elevation of 400 meters, and the end point is at an altitude of 1891 meters.
This hike is suitable for children who already have some experience in mountain walking. The trail follows the course of the Demyanitsa River and offers pleasant shade, as it passes through forest areas. Wide and comfortable, it provides a comfortable experience, even for a longer stay outdoors. At the beginning there is a meadow with gazebos and a small chapel - an ideal place for a short break before the start of the hike or for relaxation on the way back.
Along the route there is a view of the Yulenski Skok waterfall, which with its 9 meters height often attracts the attention of children. At the end of the trail, you reach Demyanitsa hut – one of the more accessible huts in Pirin, which is open year-round. There you can take a longer break, have a bite to eat and enjoy the mountain atmosphere. The hut is also a good starting point for other routes in the area, if the weather and preparation allow it.

3. Zli Kamak area – Vitosha
The walk to the Zli Kamak area starts from the Kambanite park near the village of Bistritsa and gradually leads to the end point, located at 803 meters above sea level. With a total length of 4.75 kilometers and a duration of about two hours, the route is suitable even for the youngest in the family. The slight elevation gain of 151 meters and the flat terrain make it completely accessible for beginners and children.
The trail passes mainly through a forest area, which provides pleasant shade and coolness during the warm seasons. The lack of steep and dangerous sections guarantees a high level of safety and tranquility during the hike. Although only a short distance from Sofia, the route creates a feeling of detachment from the city and closeness to nature.
This is an excellent choice for a one-day walk, which can be combined with a picnic in the area or a visit to Pancharevo. The route is ideal for a weekend getaway with the whole family, without the need for complicated organization or special equipment.

4. Eco-trail "Byala Reka" - Central Balkan
Near the town of Kalofer is one of the most suitable places for walking with small children - the eco-trail "Byala Reka". The route is circular, with a length of 1830 meters and an average duration of an hour and a half. The terrain is easy and even, which makes it an excellent choice for both beginners in mountain tourism and families with children.
The path passes through a picturesque gorge, following the course of the Byala Reka itself. It is secured with wooden bridges and has designated resting places where children can stop, play or simply observe the surrounding nature. There are interesting natural and educational elements along the entire route that keep the attention and curiosity of young explorers.
The best time to visit this eco-trail is in spring and summer, when the river is at its highest and the surrounding greenery is at its most saturated. The combination of beautiful nature, an accessible route and entertainment opportunities makes this walk one of the most recommended in the Central Balkan region.
5. Eco-trail “View of Nine Mountains” – Sirishtnik Village, Rudini Mountain
The eco-trail, which starts from the church in the village of Sirishtnik, about 60 kilometers southwest of Sofia, leads to Sirishtnikska Rudina Peak, located at 1172 meters above sea level. The hike lasts between two and three hours in both directions and offers not just a walk, but a full-fledged climb with an impressive panoramic reward at the finish.
The route is named “View of Nine Mountains” because of the view from the top, from where on a clear day more than nine mountain ranges can be seen in different directions. The trail passes through a shady forest, past a small chapel, the original “Eye” mosaic and wooden stairs, which give the route an adventurous character and make it exciting for both children and adults.
It is recommended for children over 6–7 years old, who are already used to walking on uneven terrain and have basic motor endurance. Although the route is not difficult, it requires basic mountain equipment – sturdy shoes, comfortable clothes and a spare set in the backpack. The variety of terrain and sights along the way turns this hike into a real exploratory experience, suitable for active family time in nature.
Hiking with children in the mountains not only brings the family together, but also fosters a love of nature, motor skills and orientation in the terrain. Choosing the right routes and good preparation are the key to a pleasant, memorable experience. Always consider the weather, distance, terrain and season, as well as the physical capabilities of the youngest participants.
With the right equipment, a clear goal and the right pace, every walk can turn into an exciting and safe adventure. And what could be better than that – together in nature, in the silence of the forest or by clean lakes, in the mountains that teach, inspire and bring peace.
