How to reach Kostenets Waterfall: Guide and Routes

Sometimes an adventure doesn't require serious elevation gain, heavy backpacks, and hour-long treks. Sometimes the desire is simply to escape the urban environment, hear the sound of falling water, and take impressive shots without the need for an early start and complex logistics. Kostenets Waterfall is exactly such a place.

Kostenets Waterfall

Where is it located and why go there?

Kostenets Waterfall is located in the resort area of Vili Kostenets, above the village of Kostenets. It is important to clarify that the village should not be confused with the town of Kostenets, which is located a few kilometers earlier along the road.

The waterfall has a height of about 12 meters. Although it doesn't impress with the scale of the highest Bulgarian waterfalls, its power comes from the waters of the Chavcha River, also known as the Kostenska River. Unlike many other waterfalls that significantly decrease their flow during the summer months, Kostenets Waterfall is a year-round attraction, being most powerful and impressive in the spring.

The place is extremely suitable for short walks, family visits, and light photography trips. Access to the waterfall itself is via a well-maintained alley, making it an excellent choice for people with small children and for visitors not seeking physical exertion. The area around the waterfall offers opportunities for relaxation and is a popular destination for weekend tourism.

The Route: How to get there by car?

Traveling to Kostenets Waterfall is easy and convenient, with most of the route passing through a highway. The road surface is in good condition, allowing access for all types of vehicles:

  • Step 1: Sofia – Kostenets: Set off from Sofia along the Trakia motorway (A1) towards Plovdiv. After about 50–60 km, look for the exit for Kostenets / Muhovo. Continue along the main road towards the town of Kostenets.
  • Step 2: The town – the village – the villas: Pass through the town of Kostenets, following the signs for the village of Kostenets. Once in the village, continue up towards the mountain to Vili Kostenets.
  • Step 3: The parking lot: The asphalt road ends at a wide square at the end of the resort zone. There are eateries and an information center on site. Coordinates can be set directly to "Kostenets Waterfall".

Public transport option

If you don't have a car, the adventure is also possible by train. Take a train from Sofia Central Station to Kostenets station (about an hour and a half). From the station to the waterfall, the distance is about 6-7 km. The most reliable option is to use a taxi, as local buses are not very frequent, though they remain a budget alternative for those not in a hurry.

The Walk Itself

There's no need for trekking boots or heavy equipment here. The path from the parking lot is a developed park alley with a wooden arch at the beginning. The alley follows the bed of the Chavcha River and passes through a shaded forest. Along the way, you'll see the monument to Ivan Vazov – a logical stop for a photo, as the poet was inspired by these places.

The terrain is well-maintained, with railings and benches. The distance is covered in 5–10 minutes of calm walking. The route is suitable for parents with strollers, with only a few steps at the very end where the stroller must be carried for a closer view of the waterfall.

What else to see nearby?

Since the walk is short, you can fill your day with additional sites in the area:

  • Thermal baths: The region is famous for its mineral springs. Right opposite the start of the trail, there are pools with warm mineral water for perfect relaxation.
  • Gurgulitsa Hut: Located about 3-4 km up via a pleasant asphalt road through beautiful beech forests. It is suitable for lunch or as a starting point for more serious treks.
  • Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin: Located very close to the waterfall, it carries a special energy according to local legends.
  • Skalovite Waterfall: For more advanced hikers – located above Gurgulitsa Hut, but the path is longer and requires serious footwear.
