The sneakers, the heavy or the lightweight hiking shoes are the best for hiking with a backpack

Summer is gone, and with it the breeze. However, the coming autumn offers us new excitements and opportunities for adventures in nature. And what could be better than a nice walk in Rila, Pirin or the Rhodopes? The colorful colors of the leaf-changing season call to us. So, tighten your backpack, tie your shoes, and go to the mountains. As we mentioned shoes, you are probably hesitant whether to choose a hiking model or plain sneakers? Well let's look at the benefits.

The main factors to consider when choosing hiking shoes are the terrain and climatic conditions. Of course, the financial element must also be taken into account, given that reliable hiking boots cost a lot of money. Third, and last but not least, we would ask ourselves - How often do I plan to climb? Is it worth the investment? the advantages.

1. Backpacking  - what does it mean?

Backpacking (from English. Backpack - a backpack) is a type of tourism, known considerably in recent years. It can be described as self-organized low-cost travel. Backpackers are usually young people with small budget (or just adventurous) who travel by public transport, walk or ride, bringing a huge backpack.

Answering the question of what are the most appropriate shoes for a backpackers is not unequivocal - it turns out that this is actually a very complex issue. In fact, it is unlikely to get both logical and complete response, even from experienced travelers and tourists, because everyone has their own views and opinions, which can be radically different and highly individual.

Firstly, the type of shoes depends on the specific conditions of the season. For mountaineering, hiking in winter or off season, as well as for climbing the heights where a lot of snow and ice are expected,  are required special high shoes for the rigor conditions. For such cases are good, for example shoes STADOR.

Let`s assume that in this case we will talk about tourism in a moderate climate conditions where most shoes would be ok. On the other hand, there are many types of hiking boots and alternative solutions, such as hiking sandals, so for maximum simplicity will consider the question of sneakers or hiking boots?

For a long time, very experienced tourists as Colin Fletcher, for example - writer and one of the first backpackers (although he is an admirer of hiking sandals) - have used high-heeled shoes because they are stable and sustainable, and trainers still would have be improved. Therefore hiking shoes become reliable and secure approach.

In recent decades tourism styles drastically changed. Travelers go with smaller backpacks like Ray Jardine (who repeatedly passes Pacific ridge path, the path of the continental watershed and the path of the Appalachians) who supports the idea of a lighter backpacks, minimal equipment and the use of sneakers .

2. Why choose sneakers?

Sneakers are light and comfortable, not that hiking boots are not. When hiking on flatter mountain terrain, as well as on paved trails, sneakers will do a perfect job. Most models of hiking sneakers have a breathable fabric. In warm and sunny weather, this type of shoes will not steam your feet and you will feel great.

The main advantages of sneakers are:

  • Little own weight. This is the main advantage of sneakers, as they significantly reduce fatigue when crossing long distances. After walking with heavy hiking boots, the difference is obvious. It also gives the possibility of crossing greater distances per day. Experienced travelers with light backpacks and shoes typically go about 50 kilometers more per day, compared with traditionalists betting on heavier shoes.
  • Greater convenience. You do not have to wear them for a long time to fit on your feet. It is only necessary to be your size.
  • Excellent mobility and agility in climbing.
  • Although they are not completely waterproof, they dry very quickly, so crossing rivers and streams is no longer a problem. Basically, if you wear wool socks, transitions with wet feet do not create serious discomfort (unless it's cold or conditions impose your feet stay wet for days). For most leather or Gore-tex shoes once been soaked are needed days to dry completely. Since this is quite unpleasant, most tourists prefer to remove their shoes while crossing of wet areas, which takes time, or wear a second pair of shoes.
  • They are cheaper - you will save on average 3-4 times the value of hiking boots!

Alpina`s trainers model COOL  are a model from 2015 and they are one of the best selling products in our store. They are stable, anatomic suitable for summer tourism, long walks and excursions, and for city life.

If you are not a regular climber and also practice other outdoor sports, sneakers are an ideal option. So, take the ball, call your friends, and kick in nature.

The disadvantages of trainers are:

  • In most cases, they are not waterproof and your feet can cool down in a snow or cold water. Low shoes with waterproof Gore-tex membrane is also not helping much, as water or snow will eventually reach your feet.
  • Not provide support for the ankles, unlike the higher hiking boots. This is a significant problem for people with weak ankles, and for those who are used to wear boots. In addition, if your backpack is heavier, the possibility to lose balance and receive injuries increased significantly. People who rely on sneakers, noted that through them they improve their endurance and strengthen of the ankles, which is a better option than if you should rely on your high hiking shoes for protection.
  • Flexible soles. Some people argue that you should have more rigid soles to be able to carry a heavy backpack, but it is usually not essential in terms of the flat terrain and walking on paved streets in towns and villages. Hard soles provide slightly better protection against sharp rocks and are absolutely necessary for climbing or passing on steep snow slopes.
  • Your feets are getting dirty, as most of sneakers seeps dust.
  • Lack of durability. You may need to repeatedly change your shoes in one season.

You can also use an intermediate option between tourist boot and trainers - hiking boots, which have waterproof and breathable membrane.

It is a fact that many backpackers successfully use both types of shoes, even though most of them rely on the lighter backpacks and lightweight sneakers whenever they have the opportunity. Most of the fastest travelers prefer summer lighter shoes.

If you plan to indulge in a trip with a backpack and it is not possible to have snow and cold, our recommendation is to test lightweight sneakers, but note the following:

  • If you do not have a significant tourist experience or the terrain is hard and bumpy, there is a serious risk of sprained ankle. It is important to develop these muscles gradually. Do not take spectacular hikes before you are confident enough in the strength and durability of your feet.
  • As with any walking tour, make sure you have a first aid kit and everything you will need to deal with possible injuries and sprains ankles. It is also better not to move alone to have someone to help you if necessary.
  • At the same time, it is recommended that your backpack should be lightweight. By itself, it has many advantages, but also significantly reduces the risk of injury and fatigue, and undoubtedly increases the pleasure of any trip and allows you to appreciate the benefits of sneakers. Collect your luggage carefully. Leaving or ignoring something important can endanger your safety.

You can also use an intermediate option between a hiking boot and a sneaker - hiking sneakers that have a waterproof and breathable membrane.

3. Advantages of hiking boots

  • when climbing mostly rocky / rocky terrain, hiking boots provide good traction. With their deep grips, they will definitely protect you from falling or slipping. They also provide more stable ankle support;
  • hiking boots are made of fabric that can withstand different climatic conditions. In snow or rain, definitely this type of waterproof shoes are preferable;
  • they are more durable! Investing in a pair of good hiking boots will pay off in time, especially if you plan to go to the mountains often. According to statistics, this type of hiking boots have an average durability of about 1,500km hike;
  • you will look great! Let's not underestimate the image. Hiking shoes and professional equipment will give you the look of a real mountaineer (to prepare for the selfie from the Himalayas!);

The fact is that many backpackers use both types of shoes successfully, although more and more of them rely on lighter backpacks and lightweight sneakers whenever they can. Most of the fastest travelers prefer lighter shoes for the summer.

4. Sneakers or hiking boots?

As you can see, both hiking boots and sneakers have their advantages and specifics. If you plan to dedicate yourself to mountaineering, to climb the high peaks of Bulgaria (and why not the Alps or the Andes), and not to stop in front of the elements of nature, then a stable pair of hiking boots are absolutely necessary. Every penny will pay off in the long run!

Light and flexible hiking sneakers are preferable for a leisurely walk in nature in good weather. But also in their choice, comfort is key. Don't make the mistake of climbing the mountain in sneakers or flat-soled sneakers. Heel pain the next day is guaranteed! If you are worried about rain or poking in a puddle, just in case, prepare a pair of spare socks in the outfit. They can always be used.

So - have you already chosen? Let's go to new horizons!
