5 hikes in Rila, which everyone must do

Rila is among the most majestic mountains on the European continent, and the heart of the Balkans. Its richness hides a diverse palette of sharp peaks, woodlands, rivers and waterfalls. Discovering the secrets of Rila is a mission to which one can dedicate a lifetime. It hides challenges for the most experienced mountaineers, but can also be caring and hospitable even for the youngest visitors. Let's take a look at 5 ideas for hiking in Rila, which you will not regret!

The seven Rila lakes

Undoubtedly the most visited destination in Rila are the seven Rila lakes. A pleasant walk, suitable for both beginners and more experienced mountaineers, this transition will charge you with pure energy and unforgettable views. However, keep in mind that the weather is often changeable, so wear outerwear as well as comfortable hiking shoes. Part of the transition is on rocky terrain.

Our transition starts from the Rila Lakes hut, which can be reached by lift from Panichishte. The return ticket for adults costs BGN 20. After about 20-25 minutes on the lift, we will reach the station at the Rila Lakes hut. For those who have forgotten, we can get water from the hut and go on the trail.

We will go to the right of the hut, along the path that leads to the ridge. The initial ascent is a bit steeper, so with a light step, we will get into a rhythm. In about half an hour the first lake will be revealed - the Kidney. Continuing along the Dry Hill, we will reach a stone platform from which we can enjoy a view over 4 lakes (in clear weather).

Reaching the shore of the Kidney, we can stop for a rest, sit on the lawn, and eat something.

The second part of the transition will take us on a steep path to the Eye, and then to the highest lake - Tear. From there, on the so-called Lake Peak (2657 m.), We will have a remarkable view of the 7 lakes. Of course, the summer months are recommended. The days are long, the weather is warmer and the sky is clear.

We will go down another route, making a kind of tour that will take us to the valley, where three of the lakes are hidden. Remember that getting off is more stressful for the knees, so walk carefully. I also recommend a pair of trekking poles for balance and support.

The whole transition lasts about 5 hours (depending on the rest time). And every minute is worth it!

Malyovitsa

Malyovitsa Peak is located in the northwestern part of Rila. From its 2729 meters, in good weather you can see Mount Musala, Rila Monastery and Vitosha. From Sofia, we must first go in the direction of Samokov. From the town of Samokov, we take a route in the direction of Govedartsi, and after about half an hour we are at the Central Mountain School Malyovitsa. That is where our starting point is.

The climb begins on a light forest path, leading us to the hut Malyovitsa. The walk is about 30 minutes, at the mouth of the river of the same name. From Malyovitsa hut, we follow the path marked in red, which will take us to Elenino Lake.

After resting by the lake, we are ready for the real part - climbing to the top. The displa cement becomes sharper and the pavement is sprinkled with stones. In this section, we recommend that you walk carefully. For this purpose, you will benefit from a pair of hiking boots, providing you with stable ankle support. At a normal walking pace, this section will take you about an hour - an hour and a half. You will be rewarded with a unique panoramic view from Malyovitsa peak, and the selfie will be worthy of a new profile photo. Don`t forget your sunglasses because the sun in very strong up there.

Kostenski waterfall

For lovers of natural wonders, and those looking for a light and cool walk, Kostenski waterfall is an ideal destination for a day. Spring is probably the best season for this route, as the greenery is colorful and the waters of the melting snow are lush.

The village of Kostenets is located only 1 hour away from Sofia and Plovdiv. If you are a fan of archeological sites, here you can visit the fortress "Trayanovi Vrata", where in 986 Tsar Samuel defeated the army of Basil II. In the upper part of the village there is a playground with a sign leading us to the waterfall.

A marked and comfortable path winding around the river Chavcha will direct us to Kostenski waterfall. Passing through a wooden bridge, we will reach a fountain from which mineral water springs. The walk is also suitable for children, and the tranquility is guaranteed by the dripping sound of clear waters coming from the high peaks of Rila.

Rila Skakavitsa Waterfall

Speaking of Rila, how can we not mention the oldest hut in Bulgaria - Skakavitsa. In its 90-year history, Skakavitsa hut has housed thousands of mountaineers, and legends testify to countless stories, shared moments, laughter and boundless mountain spirit.

Passing the town of Sapareva Banya, we follow the road to Panichishte (the same one we went to the Rila Lakes). Before the lower station of the lift, we will see a sign to the right for Skakavitsa. We reach a rest station where you can park. From there we go along a marked orange path to Skakavitsa hut. The trail is easily passable, well marked, and there are no steep sections. A pair of sneakers or light hiking boots is absolutely enough for this purpose. We will cross rivers and streams, where we can stop for relaxation, splash, or take a sip of fresh mountain water.

In about 1 hour we will reach Skakavitsa hut. The place is great for relaxation, we sit on a wooden stove or on the meadow, pour tea, and enjoy the view. From there we will have the first view of the waterfall. We have about 45 minutes to walk to the foot of the waterfall. We will pass through groves and some more rocky sections. Skakavitsa waterfall is impressive, with a height of over 70 meters. In some of the coldest winters, it even froze on ice pods. We listen to the mighty gust of water, and we are out of breath!

Beli Iskar Eco Trail

For a pleasant day walk and relaxation from the hectic everyday life, the eco-trail Beli Iskar in the gorge of the river of the same name offers a great opportunity for families with children. Here you will enjoy picturesque paths, bridges, forests and rivers. And children will be captivated by the abundance of natural resources.

The trail is about 7 km long and starts shortly after the village of Beli Iskar, 11 km from the town of Samokov. You don't need any special equipment - just water, picnic snacks, and a good mood. The whole adventure will take about 3-4 hours, and the detour route will take you through different views on the way back.
